  • If your child has already been diagnosed with a speech or language disorder, speech therapy can play a vital role in supporting their growth and communication skills. But even if you don’t have a diagnosis, it’s important to pay attention to any signs that your child may be falling behind. Trusting your instincts and seeking an evaluation early can make a big difference—early intervention often leads to the best outcomes.

While children develop at their own pace, certain behaviors may signal that your child could benefit from a speech-language evaluation. Here are some signs to look for:

    Early Speech and Play Milestones

    • No babbling by 9 months

    • No clear first words by 12 months

    • Fewer than 50 words by 18 months

    • Limited pretend play or motor imitation by 12 months

    • Little or no response to sounds, toys, or people

    • Avoids eye contact or shows limited interest in interacting with others

    • Speech that’s difficult for familiar and/or unfamiliar listeners to understand after age 3

    Language and Communication Challenges

    • Trouble following simple one-step directions by age 2

    • Difficulty answering basic questions between ages 2 and 3

    • Struggles to tell simple or familiar stories by age 4

    • Limited vocabulary, sentence structure, or grammar by age 4

    • Not producing all speech sounds clearly by age 6

    Social and Learning Difficulties

    • Difficulty engaging in conversations with peers

    • Trouble understanding humor, sarcasm, or conversational turns

    • Concerns about early reading, decoding, or comprehension skills

If any of these signs sound familiar, it may be time to explore whether speech therapy could help. We're here to guide you through that process—early support can make all the difference.

  • To meet the unique needs of each child and family, we offer flexible therapy locations:

    • In the classroom: We can provide therapy within a preschool setting, supporting your child in their natural learning environment.

    • Pull-out sessions at school: We are happy to coordinate with teachers to schedule one-on-one sessions during a time that minimizes classroom disruption.

    • In-home sessions: We also offer therapy in the comfort of your home, where your child may feel most at ease.

Collaboration is key to success—we work closely with both families and educators to ensure consistency and progress across environments. Just as importantly, we focus on building a strong, trusting relationship with each child, knowing that connection is the foundation for meaningful growth.

  • Following the initial evaluation, your clinician will develop a customized treatment plan tailored to your child’s unique needs. While most therapy sessions are 60 minutes in length, some children may benefit from shorter, more frequent sessions depending on their goals, attention span, or specific areas of need.

  • Every child is unique, and so is their approach to speech therapy. Sessions are tailored to meet your child’s individual needs.

For younger children, therapy often involves play-based interventions. This is because young children learn best through play, and it helps keep them engaged. These sessions may include:

    • Talking and playing to encourage communication

    • Fun games that promote speech development

    • Using books or pictures to stimulate language skills

    • Practicing proper sound production

    • Coaching parents on how to support their child’s progress at home

For older children, therapy may incorporate a blend of play-based methods and more structured, table-based strategies to focus on specific skills.

The goal is always to support your child’s development, but also to make sure that therapy feels fun and engaging. After all, children are more likely to succeed when they enjoy the process!

  • Talk Time Speech Therapy, LLC operates on a private pay basis and is not currently in-network with any insurance providers. However, many families choose to submit claims to their insurance companies for potential reimbursement at their plan’s out-of-network rates. Coverage and reimbursement vary depending on your specific insurance policy.

To support this process, we provide superbills—detailed invoices that include all required diagnostic and procedure codes. These are designed to meet the documentation requirements of most insurance companies. While we do not submit claims on your behalf, families are encouraged to contact their insurance provider directly to inquire about out-of-network speech therapy coverage. You may want to ask:

    • Whether your plan includes out-of-network benefits for speech therapy

    • What documentation is needed for reimbursement

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions—we’re happy to support you in navigating this process.

  • We are based in Arlington, Virginia, but are happy to do at-home and preschool visits throughout Northern Virginia!

  • The length of speech therapy varies for each child and depends on several factors, including their age, the nature and severity of the speech or language difficulty, consistency with attendance, and family involvement at home.

While some children may make progress in a few months, others may benefit from longer-term support. Our goal is always to help your child reach their communication goals as efficiently and effectively as possible.

  • While we prefer to work with your child in person, teletherapy is also a great option! We provide high-quality virtual sessions using engaging, play-based speech therapy activities tailored to your child’s needs. For many children, teletherapy can be both effective and fun.
